Truth Assassination" - Sada Organization Releases Report Documenting Journalist Casualties Over 9 Years"

Today, the National Organization of Yemeni Reporters "Sada," issued a human rights report on the occasion of Yemeni Press Day, June 9, titled "Truth Assassination." The report documents the number of journalists, both male and female, who have been killed between January 2015 and December 2023 in various parts of Yemen.

The report documents 63 cases of journalists and independent media professionals, including 3 female journalists, accounting for 5% of the total. The victims were killed while working in their offices, during their field coverage, especially in conflict areas, or through direct targeting.

The report highlights the entities and parties involved in these violations and crimes. The Houthi group tops the list of violators, responsible for 54% of the total cases of killings, followed by the Legitimacy Support Coalition at 22.2%. Incidents of killings classified as "perpetrator unknown" rank third at 1.19%, and forces affiliated with the internationally recognized legitimate government account for 4.8% of the cases, divided among the National Army, Popular Resistance, and Transitional Council forces.

The report identifies 17 types and methods used to carry out the killings, directly or indirectly targeting journalists. Additionally, one female journalist was killed under mysterious circumstances.

The year 2018 witnessed the highest rates of journalist killings in Yemen, followed by 2016 and 2015, respectively. No cases of killings were recorded in 2023.

The report followed a methodology based on monitoring, documenting, data collection, and providing necessary information about the documented cases. Legal experts and advisors working with Sada organization were consulted to ensure the accuracy of the legal descriptions of the cases documented in the report.
