SADA Organization Launches Training of Trainers Course on Journalistic Safety

A Training of Trainers (ToT) course on professional safety for journalists began today, Sunday, in the city of Sayun. The course is organized by the National Organization of Yemeni Media Reporters “SADA” in partnership with IMS and funded by the European Union.

The 7-day course, inaugurated by the Deputy Governor of Hadramout for Wadi and Desert Affairs, Engineer Hisham Al-Saeedi, aims to prepare trainers capable of transferring safety knowledge and practices to fellow journalists across various provinces of Yemen.

During the opening session, Al-Saeedi welcomed the organization of the course in Wadi Hadramout and emphasized the importance of such training programs in enhancing journalists' awareness of safety, particularly amid the challenges they face. He affirmed the local authority’s support for these efforts.

For his part, SADA President Youssef Hazeb stated that journalists in Yemen are confronted with two major threats: “The first is direct targeting by active forces and parties in the country, where journalists are increasingly seen as a threat or mutual adversary. The second is the lack of awareness among journalists and the absence of genuine solidarity between them. This further weakens their situation and exposes them to greater risks, especially with the ongoing war and signs of a new round of conflict, which will intensify the threats journalists face, thus necessitating protection and preparedness.”

He added, “This course aims to qualify a group of professional journalists and enable them to transfer knowledge and experience to their peers, while contributing to the creation of a national network of trainers specialized in journalistic safety. This network will serve as a sustainable tool for promoting a safety culture and strengthening self-protection within Yemen’s media community.”

The course, led by media training and communication consultant Bassam Ghabar, covers a variety of topics, including identifying risk patterns journalists may encounter, planning field assignments, legal protection methods, training methodologies, and designing training activities.
