Officials and judges discuss a study on freedom of expression and the press in Yemen between legislative shortcomings and judicial incapacity

The National Organization of Yemeni Reporters (SADA) held today, in Aden Governorate, a discussion workshop within the framework of the “Freedom of Expression in Yemen” project, in partnership with the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), to discuss a study on freedom of expression and the press in Yemen between legislative shortcomings and judicial incapacity.

The workshop was attended by officials from the Ministries of Justice, Legal Affairs, and Human Rights, as well as representatives of the judiciary. The sessions were dedicated to reviewing the study’s key points and exchanging views on the state of legislation related to freedom of expression and the press, and the extent to which the judiciary is effective in protecting and ensuring its practice.

Discussions addressed the major challenges facing journalists and media professionals in carrying out their work, the legal gaps that allow violations to persist, and the weakness of accountability and judicial oversight mechanisms, all of which negatively impacted the media environment and citizens’ right to access information.

Participants emphasized the importance of developing national legislation in line with international human rights treaties and standards, and activating the judiciary’s role as a fundamental guarantor of freedom of opinion and expression. They stressed that strengthening press freedom is a cornerstone for building the rule of law and consolidating the values of democracy.
