Marib Governorate witnessed a protest on Saturday by a group of journalists and human rights activists in solidarity with Yemeni journalists who have been abducted and forcibly disappeared, marking World Press Freedom Day on May 3, 2025.

The participants in the protest—called for by The National Organization of Yemeni Reporters SADA—raised photos of abducted journalists Nabil Alsaddawi and Mohammed Almeyahi, as well as forcibly disappeared journalists Waheed Alsaufi and Nasseh Shaker.

The protest also featured the unveiling of the largest solidarity mural in Yemen, displayed on the facade of the building that houses The National Organization of Yemeni Reporters SADA. Journalists and human rights advocates wrote messages of solidarity on the mural, condemning the violations committed against journalists in Yemen.

During the protest, a statement on the state of press freedom in Yemen was read aloud. The joint statement was signed by over 20 local and international organizations and media outlets.

In the statement, the signatories renewed their call to respect freedom of expression in Yemen and to end violations against journalists. They expressed deep concern over the ongoing campaigns of repression and abuse targeting journalists, including killings, enforced disappearances, and unfair trials.

The statement highlighted violations and crimes documented by the Yemeni Journalists Syndicate during 2024, which exceeded 100 press-related abuses. It also cited SADA’s documentation of the killing of 65 journalists since 2015.

The joint statement held both the Houthi group and the internationally recognized government responsible for the deteriorating situation, calling for an immediate end to the persecution of journalists, the release of all abducted media workers, and the creation of a safe environment for journalism. It also urged international organizations to exert genuine pressure to protect media freedom in Yemen and to end the culture of impunity.

The statement emphasized that continued repression of journalists poses a direct threat to the right to access information and undermines prospects for justice and transparency in the country.
